Other speakers at the conference echoed Taiclet’s calls for federal action, with outgoing EEI chair Maria Pope, president and CEO of Portland General Electric, arguing that the industry needs a federal backstop against catastrophic wildfire losses, and Eric Grey, EEI’s vice president of government relations, highlighting the work of a growing, multi-industry effort to lobby for federal wildfire policy.

“We are asking lawmakers and regulators and state capitals to look at…a comprehensive national strategy,” Grey said. He added that the coalition, Partners in Wildfire Prevention, is currently focused on building awareness and on the Fix Our Forests Act, H.R. 471/S. 1462, which has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives but must still clear the U.S. Senate. ….
